Phoenix House Girls' Dorm

My intention is to create a second mosaic on the Girls' Dorm at Phoenix Academy on Live Oak Street between Congress and South First.

I'm requesting support for this project.  I know in my heart it is necessary to continue to make mosaics there because I want the kids who live and heal at this amazing place to have the support and energy of the murals; to know experientially how spontaneous art can help light up the soul.

I am investigating grants through The Phoenix House and other sources but so far, nothing has materialized and I feel it is imperative that the project gets started anyway, anyhow... NOW.

As you may or may not know, Phoenix Academy is a residential treatment center/high school for teens with drug and alcohol problems and last August I created, with the help of more than 30 students, staff and community members, a mural celebrating the healing aspects of the myth of the Phoenix.  It spans the entire wall bordering the street in front of the campus and is a truly magical piece of art.  If you have not walked the length of the mosaic, you should.  If you have walked it, you know what a beguiling and inspiring experience it is.  It tells stories of healing and connection.  It speaks of hope.  And it is community.  The collaborative group of people who helped create it can attest to that.

The project adorning the Girls' Dorm will unfold much as the wall did.  Students and friends will help create tiles during many sessions either at my studio or at the Academy.  Each tile will be made with love and intention.  They will be beautiful and colorful, dimensional and rich in meaning.  The entire project will have a voice and each small piece within will be appreciated in its own right.  Students and friends and area artists will help construct the wall onsite.  It will be another rich and meaningful process.

You know me.  I can create much with very little, but I do need money to help make this a reality.

I'm hoping that you see, as I do, how important this is for the students and community of South Austin.  Any gift will be extremely appreciated.  You may send donations to:

Austin, Texas 78704

Thank you.  Sincerely.
